The Mysuru Zoo spread over 157 Acres of land, is one of the oldest zoo in India. It is named after Sri Chamarajendra Wadiyar, who had established this zoo in 1892. History says that the King Chamarajendra Wadiyar used to bring animals like Giraffe, Antelopes, Bears, Chimpanzee and Primates during his visit to the European countries.
Later in 1972 the zoo was handed over the Forest Department. This zoo is visited by lot of tourists during Dasara and summer holidays. Animals like Tigers, Lions, Jaguar, Elephant, Giraffe, Leopard, Rhinoceros, Baboon, Crocodile, Chimpanzee, Wallaby, Hippopotamus, Zebra, Wolf and Dhole are the main attractions. Mysuru zoo is the only Zoological garden when tourists can see Gorilla. The rarest of animals like red kangaroos, lemurs, sun bear,
female chimpanzee and binturong can be seen here. The zoo is open for public visit from 8.30 AM to 5.30 PM on all days except Tuesday. Tourists are recommended to visit before 11 AM or after 3 AM to site more animals. For safety reasons tourists are advised to not to feed animals. A entry fee of Rupees 50 for adults and Rupees 20 for children’s of age group 5 – 12 years is collected, when in it goes up to Rupees 60 and 30 on weekends and National holidays.
Parking fee of Rupees 5 for bicycle, Rupees for Motor cycle, Rupees 30 for Car/Jeep, Rupees 50 for Mini Bus and Rupees 70 for Bus is charged for 4 hours.
